RYA Yachtmaster Training and Exam

The demand for Skippers and Crew in the Super Yacht industry worldwide is increasing dramatically. There is a definite shortage of personal who are well qualified. If you wish to attain the ‘Master of Yachts 200 Tons’, travel the world on the most exquisite and expensive yachts, visit postcard destinations worldwide and enjoy the benefits of expense free living, get paid and even pick up the odd tip or two, then this is the course for you!

Sunshine Sailing Australia offers professional training to become ‘Master of Yachts 200 Tons’ in conjunction with the Royal Yachting Association (RYA). The scheme is accredited by the Maritime and Coastguard Agency (MCA) and is emulated throughout the world. The certificates of competence are required by commercial skippers on sailing and motor vessels up to 200 gross tonnes irrespective of length, and as entry to Megayacht qualifications. Additionally, many recreational sailors take RYA Yachtmaster exams as a measure of their competence.

The MCA administers these qualifications. For yachts over 24 metres, the MCA usually require a RYA Yachtmaster Offshore or RYA Yachtmaster Ocean as an entry qualification to their courses.

An RYA Yachtmaster is “a yachtsman or woman competent to skipper a cruising yacht on any passage that can be completed without the use of astro navigation.” This means coastal and offshore passages within 150 miles of a safe harbor. As any yacht skipper will tell you, those passages that are close to land or across shipping lanes are the most difficult, particularly if the weather is rough or the visibility poor. An RYA Yachtmaster needs a wealth of knowledge, not only to cope with plain sailing or motor cruising in sunny weather and flat seas, but also to be able to cope when things go wrong.

As of the 1st July 2014 AMSA (the Australian Maritime Safety Authority) have formally recognised RYA qualifications as acceptable for commercial use in Australian Territorial waters on commercially registered sailing vessels. Holders of the RYA Yachtmaster Offshore and Ocean Certificates of Competence can now act as Master on commercial sailing vessels less than 24 meters LOA up to 100 miles to seaward from the coast or as Mate on commercial sailing vessels less than 35 meters inside the Australian Exclusive Economic Zone. Holders of the RYA Yachtmaster Coastal certificate of competence can act as master on commercial sailing vessels less than 12 meters and up to 15 miles from the coast.
This recognition is achieved by AMSA EX18 – Marine Safety (Sail) Exemption 2014.
Effectively this means that once a person holds all of the necessary certificates they can commence working on commercially registered or surveyed sailing vessels.
To meet the criteria a person must –
A. Hold a RYA Yachtmaster Offshore or Ocean certificate of Competence with commercial endorsement from the MCA. (The UK Maritime and Coastguard Agency)
B. Hold an approved, in date First Aid certificate.
C. Hold a Marine Radio Operators Certificate (minimum of VHF)
D. Hold an in date RYA, YA or ISAF Sea survival certificate
or
Have completed the Elements of shipboard safety units or the relevant STCW course.
E. Have completed the RYA Diesel Engine course.
F. Have completed the YA powerboat handling course
or
Have completed the RYA Level 2 powerboat handling course.
G. Make a declaration of medical fitness on the approved form.

To take the RYA Yachtmaster exam you need a Marine Radio Operator’s Certificate, a current Senior First Aid Certificate and a minimum sea time of 50 days, 5 days as skipper, 2500 miles, 5 passages over 60 miles, including 2 over night and 2 as skipper. Remember that the examination is essentially a test of ability to take charge of a yacht, so your experience as skipper is most important.

If you are in need of more mileage or training, go to our RYA Fastrack Course for details.

The Course: $1595
The RYA exam fee is paid direct to RYA who issue the RYA Yachtmaster and is £260 plus £33 for the MCA commercial qualification
Run over 5 days, 4 of which are spent with the instructor covering over all aspects of both theory and practical sailing that will be assessed by the examiner. On the last day your instructor will leave the boat and the examiner will jump on.

RYA Level 2 Powerboat

The RYA’s National Powerboat Scheme is for those wanting to drive small open powerboats such as RIBs (rigid inflatable boats), sports boats and small launches. These boats are generally powered by an outboard engine, do not normally have accommodation on board, and so are not intended for extended cruises. Each person is given the opportunity to navigate and take control of the powered vessel. Your instructor is there to ensure that your first, perhaps hesitant steps as skipper are taken in safety.

During the course, you will be given the opportunity to practice your boat handling in a variety of mooring and coming alongside situations, and whilst on the water your instructor will cover subjects such as tides and currents and how to cope in emergency situations such as ‘man over board’.

A skipper is totally responsible for the management of the powered vessel, so the course also includes meteorology, basic engine checks, passage planning, preparing for sea, and rules of the road. In addition, high speed maneuvering is undertaken.

On successful completion of this course you will be issued with the RYA Powerboat Level 2 certificate.

International Certificate of Competence - ICC

Most countries require visiting yachtsman to hold a Certificate of Competence. If you are planning to sail and cruise within Europe and the Mediterranean, the RYA recommends skippers to hold the International Certificate of Competence (ICC).
If you intend to use the European Inland Waterways you must have your International Certificate of Competence (ICC) validated for inland waterways. This is done by doing the online CEVNI module after completing the ICC.

The ICC certificate is available to citizens of most countries worldwide. It is a legal requirement for boaters in Europe. An assessment if need be is undertaken through Sunshine Sailing Australia to ensure that applicants reach the minimum standard required.

For those with little or no experience of boating, we recommend our 2-day course which covers everything needed for the certificate and includes the assessment itself. There is accommodation for those who already have certain qualifications.

Please feel free to contact the Sunshine Sailing Australia anytime to have a chat with Colin if you are unsure which course would suit your needs. Of note is that the ICC assessment can be met by completing the RYA Day Skipper Practical Course and Powerboat Level Two course.

Obtain your ICC with Sunshine Sailing Australia in Mooloolaba on the Sunshine Coast by either of the below two options:

  • – If you have the practical Day Skipper qualification (or above), you may complete the ICC application form and attach a photocopy of your practical certificate. For clarification please consult the lists of certificates eligible for conversion in the pages of the ICC Form
  • – By taking a practical assessment at our RYA training centre. The content of the course is detailed on the form. It can be taken on your own boat or our school boat. The assessment includes questions on regulations, safety, pilotage and navigation and a boat handling assessment.

Cost: ICC application  $155
CEVNI $135
SSA Assessment $550
Own Boat Assessment $POA

Professional Practices and Responsibilities - PPR

A compulsory online course for RYA Commercial Endorsement holders.

“A very useful refresher course and good to make you think in detail about some of the things you do every day.”

“An excellent course – challenging, informative and quite fun. Thank you.”

“Very informative and useful course which really helped to make me fully aware of the legislation and the responsibilities taken on when operating a commercially operated vessel.”

“Whilst initially sceptical of the need for this course I feel it is vital in order to make the transition from leisure boater to commercial skipper. I learned a great deal and will implement changes in the way I manage our boat.”

Who this course is for

Each year approximately 4,500 people apply to the RYA for a commercial endorsement in order to use their RYA qualifications professionally as skipper or crew. You could be doing anything from delivering a new 35’ yacht or driving a workboat with lifting and towing gear, to running a superyacht in the Med. Whatever your job is on board, in the commercial world you are a professional seafarer. As such, you are no different from the captain of a cruise liner – you have a duty of care to crew, passengers, and other water users, and you will be held to account if things go wrong.

The course is broken down into four modules:

Commercial environment – how you fit into the professional maritime world.
People – the importance of correct manning, keeping your skills up to date and the safe management of commercial vessels.
Vessel – the compulsory carriage and maintenance of safety equipment and how to create and implement risk control and operating procedures. ·
Purpose – making sure your vessel is suitable and legal for the work you are carrying out, your obligations in protecting the environment, appropriate planning and situational awareness.
Following the modules there is a mock assessment so you can check you are ready before moving on to the final graded online assessment.
We estimate users will take around 6 to 8 hours to work through the four course modules. The graded end of course assessment is split into two sections, totaling 2 ½ hours.
All new applicants for a commercially endorsed RYA Certificate of Competence must first pass the PPR course. Anyone renewing a commercially endorsed RYA Certificate of Competence must pass the PPR course prior to their next renewal date, if they haven’t already done so.

How to take the PPR course

The PPR course is run by RYA recognised training centres. Contact us her at SSA and we will get your registered and ready to run through the course

Exemptions from this course

If you hold an MCA Deck Officer’s Certificate of Competence as Officer of the Watch, Master 200*, Master 500 or above you do not need to take the PPR course. Please send a copy of your MCA certificate with your application or renewal form for your commercial endorsement.
* Please note the ‘Master 200’ referred to here is the MCA Master 200gt STCW qualification. This is not the RYA/MCA Yachtmaster™ qualification.
