You will now advance your sailing skills and safety knowledge to enable you to skipper unsupervised in sheltered waters.

Assess risks on board, monitor boat maintenance, know the actions in an emergency, sail on or off a dock, mooring and anchor, interpret weather forecasts and managing crew. With skippering comes the responsibilities of keeping the vessel and crew safe, therefore a deeper knowledge and understanding at all skills are important.

What will I learn?

  • How to prepare the yacht for coming alongside
  • How to set sails, how to trim & reef sails in all conditions
  • How to moor and anchor
  • Interpret weather forecasts
  • Take control of different MOB situations
  • Apply the  Rules of the Road
  • Understanding the buoyage system symbols and sequences
  • Advanced knots & stowing
  • Safety & safety equipment
  • Seamanship; chartwork, tides and currents

What do I bring?

Bring a hat, sunglasses, sunscreen, bathing suit, a warm jumper, change of clothes (minimal wardrobe needed), spray jacket. Be sure to pack this in a flexible soft bag. Water bottle, lunch and a snack.

First and last weekend of the month or on request- MOOLOOLABA

This is an exciting sailing opportunity provided by Sunshine Sailing Australia. It provides a fun and accessible entry into sailing and gives participants further opportunity to improve and develop sailing skills and techniques.

The courses will equip you with the essentials  required to safely sail a small keel boat or trailer yacht without the fear of capsize or getting wet! As your skills progress, you will also develop an understanding of each person’s role and how teamwork plays a major part of being an effective crew.

You will come away with the knowledge and confidence to sail a small day yacht, such as a keel boat, competently and for those that wish, you can then progress to larger yachts or participate as crew on a racing yacht.

There are 4 units to cover to complete the full program and each course consist of 2 days.

  • YA Keel Boat – Crew
  • YA Keel Boat – Helm
  • YA Keel Boat – Seamanship
  • YA Keel Boat – Spinnaker

What experience do I need?

No experience required for Day Sailor- Crew as this is a course for absolute beginners for all other courses the course prior nor equivalent experience is the requirement . Our instructor will focus on skills, safety and enjoyment.

By the end of each course you will have sufficient knowledge and skill to be able to move towards the next course.
