Shore Based Courses

Understand chartwork, electronic navigation and GPS. Complete one of our RYA shorebase courses, either online Essential Navigation, Day Skipper, Coastal Skipper/Yachtmaster and RYA Ocean as part of a learn to sail course.

Sunshine Sailing Australia has become known as the premier sail training school in Australia, one hour drive north of Brisbane on the Sunshine Coast, Queensland. Our learn to sail programs teach beginners to advanced sailors in dinghies, sail and power, inshore, offshore and ocean.

Our theory classrooms are based at local Mooloolaba sailing clubs and offer comfortable and pleasant learning environments with the added feature of having a sailing feel which provides a far better learning experience. Small group experiences means that we are able to teach to individual experiences and skills and for those that have been away from a learning atmosphere for a while we ensure that we walk thorough at a pace that suits you.

Sunshine Sailing Australia is a Royal Yachting Association (RYA) recognized Teaching Establishment: we meet and exceed their strict guidelines to conduct RYA theory courses.

These theory courses can be taken as part of a combined Theory and Practical or as a standalone experience.

The school also now offers professional RYA Yachtmaster Career training courses for those of you who wish to pursue a career as crew or master on certified commercial charter boats or superyachts.

‘I have since been right through the RYA Program with the Sunshine Sailing Australia, including Sea Survival and Celestial Navigation. It’s been a fantastic experience being professionally trained by experts and I have forged some good friendships along the way as well. I would recommend the SSA to anyone wanting to improve or refresh their sailing ability and knowledge. Well worth the money.’ Brad Withyman, Mooloolaba.

RYA Essentials Navigation Theory - Online

The RYA Essential Navigation course is aimed at a wide audience, including anyone new to sailing, motor boating, fishing, diving, experienced dinghy or keelboat sailors.

Considering that people are short of time for leisure pursuits we have taken a new approach, aiming to give students an awareness and knowledge of basic navigation techniques and safety in just 16 hours.

This online course is the perfect stepping-stone to the more in-depth RYA Day Skipper shorebased course, or to courses on the water such as the Powerboat, Start Yachting or Competent Crew.

Below is some feedback from students on a pilot course run earlier this year:

“..an excellent introduction that all new boat users should be encouraged to complete. It gives you confidence to get the most out of your boat, whilst being aware of the risks.”

“..to be recommended for newcomers, but also very useful for those who want to do more than pull ropes and tie on fenders.”

“I would definitely recommend it to new boat owners or anyone keen to get into boating.”

Professional Practices and Responsibilities

A compulsory online course for RYA Commercial Endorsement holders.

“A very useful refresher course and good to make you think in detail about some of the things you do every day.”

“An excellent course – challenging, informative and quite fun. Thank you.”

“Very informative and useful course which really helped to make me fully aware of the legislation and the responsibilities taken on when operating a commercially operated vessel.”

“Whilst initially sceptical of the need for this course I feel it is vital in order to make the transition from leisure boater to commercial skipper. I learned a great deal and will implement changes in the way I manage our boat.”

Who this course is for

Each year approximately 4,500 people apply to the RYA for a commercial endorsement in order to use their RYA qualifications professionally as skipper or crew. You could be doing anything from delivering a new 35’ yacht or driving a workboat with lifting and towing gear, to running a superyacht in the Med. Whatever your job is on board, in the commercial world you are a professional seafarer. As such, you are no different from the captain of a cruise liner – you have a duty of care to crew, passengers, and other water users, and you will be held to account if things go wrong.

The course is broken down into four modules:

Commercial environment – how you fit into the professional maritime world.
People – the importance of correct manning, keeping your skills up to date and the safe management of commercial vessels.
Vessel – the compulsory carriage and maintenance of safety equipment and how to create and implement risk control and operating procedures. ·
Purpose – making sure your vessel is suitable and legal for the work you are carrying out, your obligations in protecting the environment, appropriate planning and situational awareness.
Following the modules there is a mock assessment so you can check you are ready before moving on to the final graded online assessment.
We estimate users will take around 6 to 8 hours to work through the four course modules. The graded end of course assessment is split into two sections, totaling 2 ½ hours.
All new applicants for a commercially endorsed RYA Certificate of Competence must first pass the PPR course. Anyone renewing a commercially endorsed RYA Certificate of Competence must pass the PPR course prior to their next renewal date, if they haven’t already done so.

How to take the PPR course

The PPR course is run by RYA recognised training centres. Contact us her at SSA and we will get your registered and ready to run through the course

Exemptions from this course

If you hold an MCA Deck Officer’s Certificate of Competence as Officer of the Watch, Master 200*, Master 500 or above you do not need to take the PPR course. Please send a copy of your MCA certificate with your application or renewal form for your commercial endorsement.
* Please note the ‘Master 200’ referred to here is the MCA Master 200gt STCW qualification. This is not the RYA/MCA Yachtmaster™ qualification.
