This RYA Competent Crew course is designed for individuals with little to no sailing experience who are keen to learn the fundamentals of safe and effective crewing. You’ll gain firsthand experience in everyday boat operations, learning how to contribute effectively to a sailing crew and developing the confidence to handle various onboard tasks.
Navigating the Basics: Seamanship Essentials:
Learn fundamental boat handling principles, including understanding tides, currents, and basic navigation, enabling you to move safely and efficiently on the water.
Ropes and Sails: The Art of Control:
Master essential knots, bends, and hitches, and develop proficiency in hoisting, trimming, and lowering sails, gaining crucial control over the boat’s movement.
Taking the Helm: Steering with Confidence:
Practice steering the boat under sail and power, maintaining a steady course and responding to changing conditions, building the confidence to navigate effectively.

No Sharing Beds w/Strangers
We know this might be something that would be a given, but it isn’t. Most schools require students (strangers) to share a bed, often with a piece of cloth or a board between them. We do not believe you should have to pay extra to have your own bed.

The Competent Crew course introduces the complete beginner to cruising and teaches personal safety, seamanship and helmsmanship to the level required to be a useful member of crew of a cruising yacht.

Living onboard throughout the course, each night is spent in a new place, allowing you to experience the delights of a real cruise. You will visit many of the quiet bays, anchorages and yacht harbour’s of Moreton Bay, Southeast corner of Queensland or the Whitsundays (depending on chosen course) and in the evenings there is time to relax and reflect on the events of the day.
Whether you prefer the stability and spaciousness of a catamaran or the traditional experience of a monohull, our RYA Day Skipper course offers options to suit your sailing style. SLEEPING & EATING
Accommodation: HAVE YOUR OWN SPACE AS STANDARD OPTION! We are the only company in Queensland providing your own space to sleep as standard. You do not have to pay extra for the no “no snuggling with strangers option”. No more cramming into the berth with a stranger, you will have your own space to sleep. Examples of your own space would be single bunks, or on the saloon bed.
Food and Dietary
Food is included in the price of the course, aside from one evening meal ashore at a local yacht club or restaurant. We will accommodate your dietary preferences including gluten free, vegan/vegetarian, lactose free, etc. You will receive a link to nominate your dietary preferences shortly after booking in for the course.
