Why choose sunshine sailing australia

With The Experience Comes Excellence.

Our school is an RYA foundational school in Australia, and has been teaching people to sail since 1989.  With 35+ years of experience, and over 15K sailors trained, we know a thing or two about sailing and helping others learn to sail.

Lowest Student / Instructor Ratio

We are the only RYA school in Queensland that has a 4:1 Student to Instructor ratio as standard. What does this mean for you? This means more room on the boat, no sharing beds, and more time for instruction. You are getting more training for the money than any other school.

Instructors Dual RYA/ASA Certified

Our instructors are not only experienced sailors but also hold dual certifications from both the RYA and ASA, the two largest sail training organizations in the world. You can rest assured knowing that you will be learning from highly qualified instructors.

Queensland's Premier Catamaran Sail Training

We are the leading RYA catamaran training center in Queensland, offering more RYA courses on catamaran than anyone else. If you want to buy, charter, or sail a catamaran, we are the school that will help you increase your abilities so you can maximize your adventure.

You Become Part of Our Community

We have a strong sailing community of past and current students. Many have boats that love to have crew aboard for a daily, weekend, or somethings longer trips. We love to get together and have BBQ’s, concerts, and flotillas. What an amazing community you could be a part of, you will be welcomed with open arms.

What our past students have to say!

I did my RYA level 2 powerboat certification last weekend here. Our instructor Mark is a legend. He is patient, knowledgeable, kind and experienced. You will definitely want someone like him who actually sailed around world for couple of times and who deeply loves and respects ships and the ocean. Sunshine Sailing Australia is great! Good location, nice boats, friendly staff and great beforehand information, etc. Highly recommended.

We just completed our ASA 101 and Day Skipper! We had never sailed before but have had time on the water in our own power boat. Rachel was amazing at catering this course to suit our future goals and experience. We travelled all the way from North WA, so everyone went out of their way to make sure we were able to complete the courses, even with the weather being completely against us on the first week! We absolutely loved the ASA course on the little monohull. Seb was a great instructor, making it fun but informative. Then we went on to the Day Skipper for 5 days live aboard on Allegro. It was great to see the difference between a monohull and catamaran and put our new skills into practice. Mark was our instructor for the RYA Day Skipper and what a wealth of knowledge he is! We feel very lucky to have had him to learn from. He is one of the most patient instructors we’ve ever met and loved hearing all of his sailing stories. The other crew members were really good fun too. Definitely a trip we won’t forget! Thanks again to Rachel and Dave for making it happen for us and thank you to Seb and Mark for teaching us the ropes! Sharn and Tristan :) Karratha, WA.

We did the competent crew course two weeks ago. We had a week with a decent wind and swell and even though we were just beginners, we left the boat confident after five days. The instructor covered a lot more than we needed to know for this course, but still we were very comfortable. I would highly recommend this sailing school.

Great exposure to real sailing, Mark put us through some very realistic scenarios which was very useful for learning. Plenty of patience for all and any questions. I benefitted greatly from my experience.

We wanted to send a big thank you to the team at Sunshine sailing. We’ve just come back from an incredible week out on the water completing our Day Skipper and Competent Crew course. A huge thank you to Nate our instructor for the week. Nate’s extensive sailing experience was very evident from the outset and his calm and patient approach made a world of difference to the crew. We couldn’t have asked for a better instructor. Also a big thank you to the owners of Sunshine sailing Rachel and David. You can tell they both love what they do and it shows in spades in every dealing we had with both of them before and after we completed the course. We’d highly recommend using Sunshine sailing to anyone considering gaining more sailing experience. We hope to see you all again for the next course. Thanks again for an incredible week. Regards Damien and Peta.

let’s answer a few of your questions

Need Answers? We’ve Got You Covered!

We are sure you have a lot of questions, and we are here to help answer those for you.  This is not a comprehensive list, it is just here to answer the most common questions we receive.  If you do not see the answer to your question, gives a call, send an email, or WhatsApp us and we will help you get the answer you need.

I have never sailed before, where do I start?

We are happy you are looking to get started towards your sailing dreams.  The best place to start is with the ASA 101 Part 1 – Sailing Fundamentals course.  This course includes books, rope, online training, and practical sailing experience.  Learning on a 19-24′ yacht is the best way to learn wind awareness, boat handling, and sail trim principles.  You can read about why it is beneficial to start on a small boat in the article Why Learning to Sail on a Small Boat is the Best Way to Learn to Sail.

<<BOOK MY SAILING COURSE NOW>>

Where do you sail from?

Great question, as we have several locations depending on the course.  Our monohulls run year-round from Mooloolaba Marina on the Sunshine Coast.  We also have monohull courses in the Whitsundays generally July – August.  Our catamaran departs Newport Marina near North Brisbane.

Where do we sail during the course?

That is part of the fun of the course, deciding where to sail based on winds, tide, and sea state.  Generally, most of our training takes place in Moreton Bay, near Brisbane.  It is an amazing place to train, with a little of everything you need to increase your skills.

There are a lot of cool places there as well, such as wrecks you can dive, hidden springs, quiet anchorages, and the river.  With no shortage of places to go and see, we often go to places that students who have lived here their whole lives did not know about.

Can I learn on my own boat?

Absolutley, we do it all of the time.  Our private tuition and Own Boat Tuition, helps you get where you want to do faster.  If you have the opportunity to learn on your own boat, with your own systems, it will make cruising and sailing that much more fun quicker.

<<LEARN MORE ABOUT PRIVATE TUTION>>

Do we stay on the boat or come back each night?

If you are on a residential course (5-day) you will be staying on the boat.  We do have courses that are local, and you go home each night.  Each of the course pages will let you know how many nights you will be on-board.

What if the weather is bad on the day of my course?

Sailing is definiltey determined by wind and sea state.  Generally, we can find a good place to sail.  Rarely will rain be an issue, as it does not affect the sailing.  In the event, we have to cancel a course, we give you as much notice as we can, and make an effort to reschedule.  For more specific information, have a look at our cancellation policy, it outlines the procedures.

That being said, we rarely have to cancel a course on our larger boats.  On the smaller boats, we usually have options to sail in protective waters, and keep a close eye on the wind.

Are there any age or physical restrictions for sailing courses?

Some of the courses do have age restrictions, but generally speaking, if a minor is with their parent than we have some flexibility.  We cannot sail with minors without a guardian.  Typically our larger vessels have a restriction of 18 years old, if unaccompanied.  Each course list the age restriction, but you are aways welcome to give us a call if you stil have questions.

Still have questions? We are here to help.
