Essential Courses & Certifications
To pursue a career in sailing, you’ll need to complete the following courses:
- Sea Safety Survival Course
- First Aid & Marine Medicine
- Short Range Radio (VHF)
- RYA Powerboat Level 2
- RYA Diesel
- RYA Yachtmaster Offshore Commercial Endorsed
Additionally, obtaining your International Certificate of Competence (ICC) is essential for those planning to sail in international waters, particularly in Europe.
These courses provide the foundational knowledge and skills required to perform specified duties on sailing vessels, such as:
- Master of a sailing vessel up to 24 meters long with operating power under 75 kW in inland waters and all waters up to 100 nautical miles from shore.
- Mate of a sailing vessel up to 35 meters long in inland waters and all waters to the outer limit of the Exclusive Economic Zone.
- Operator of a sailing vessel up to 12 meters long with operating power under 75 kW in inland waters and all waters up to 15 nautical miles from shore.
Exemption 18
Exemption 18 allows you to perform specified duties without a certificate of competency. To be eligible, you must:
- Be at least 16 years old.
- Make a declaration of medical fitness.
- Hold a current first aid certificate (HLTAID011 Provide First Aid or equivalent).
- Hold a Short Range Operator Certificate of Proficiency.
- Complete the necessary training and hold relevant certificates.
General Training
To qualify for Exemption 18, you must complete either:
- MARS00008 Shipboard Safety skill set units through a registered training organization.
- Australian Sailing RYA Safety and Sea Survival course or World Sailing Offshore personal survival course.
Specific Training Requirements
For specific duties, you must also meet additional training requirements:
For Masters and Mates:
- Complete the RYA Diesel Engine course and the RYA Level 2 Powerboat course.
- Hold the RYA Yachtmaster Offshore certificate of competence.
For Operators of Smaller Vessels:
- Hold the RYA Yachtmaster Coastal certificate.
Deckhands and Entry-Level Positions
For those starting in the yachting/cruising industry, obtaining the STCW 10 certification is crucial. We offer the following classes towards STCW 10, in collaboration with Maritime Careers for additional courses:
- RYA Powerboat Level 2
- First Aid
- Sea Safety Survival
- Short Range Radio
