Why choose sunshine sailing australia
With The Experience Comes Excellence.
Our school is an RYA foundational school in Australia, and has been teaching people to sail since 1995. With 29+ years of experience, and over 15K sailors trained, we know a thing or two about sailing.
Lowest Student / Instructor Ratio
We are the only RYA school in Queensland that has a 4:1 Student to Instructor ratio as standard. What does this mean for you? This means more room on the boat, no sharing beds, and more time for instruction. You are getting more training for the money than any other school.
Instructors Dual RYA/ASA Certified
Our instructors are not only experienced sailors but also hold dual certifications from both the RYA and ASA, the two largest sail training organizations in the world. You can rest assured knowing that you will be learning from highly qualified instructors.
Queensland's Premier Catamaran Sail Training
We are the leading RYA catamaran training center in Queensland, offering more RYA courses on catamaran than anyone else. If you want to buy, charter, or sail a catamaran, we are the school that will help you increase your abilities so you can maximize your adventure.
You Become Part of Our Community

We love to get together and have BBQ’s, concerts, and flotillas. What an amazing community you could be a part of, you will be welcomed with open arms.

I have never sailed before, where do I start?
We are happy you are looking to get started towards your sailing dreams. The best place to start is with the ASA 101 Part 1 – Sailing Fundamentals course. This course includes books, rope, online training, and practical sailing experience. Learning on a 19-24′ yacht is the best way to learn wind awareness, boat handling, and sail trim principles. You can read about why it is beneficial to start on a small boat in the article Why Learning to Sail on a Small Boat is the Best Way to Learn to Sail.
Where do you sail from?
Where do we sail during the course?
That is part of the fun of the course, deciding where to sail based on winds, tide, and sea state. Generally, most of our training takes place in Moreton Bay, near Brisbane. It is an amazing place to train, with a little of everything you need to increase your skills.
There are a lot of cool places there as well, such as wrecks you can dive, hidden springs, quiet anchorages, and the river. With no shortage of places to go and see, we often go to places that students who have lived here their whole lives did not know about.
Can I learn on my own boat?
Absolutley, we do it all of the time. Our private tuition and Own Boat Tuition, helps you get where you want to do faster. If you have the opportunity to learn on your own boat, with your own systems, it will make cruising and sailing that much more fun quicker.
Do we stay on the boat or come back each night?
If you are on a residential course (5-day) you will be staying on the boat. We do have courses that are local, and you go home each night. Each of the course pages will let you know how many nights you will be on-board.
What if the weather is bad on the day of my course?
Sailing is definiltey determined by wind and sea state. Generally, we can find a good place to sail. Rarely will rain be an issue, as it does not affect the sailing. In the event, we have to cancel a course, we give you as much notice as we can, and make an effort to reschedule. For more specific information, have a look at our cancellation policy, it outlines the procedures.
That being said, we rarely have to cancel a course on our larger boats. On the smaller boats, we usually have options to sail in protective waters, and keep a close eye on the wind.
Are there any age or physical restrictions for sailing courses?
Some of the courses do have age restrictions, but generally speaking, if a minor is with their parent than we have some flexibility. We cannot sail with minors without a guardian. Typically our larger vessels have a restriction of 18 years old, if unaccompanied. Each course list the age restriction, but you are aways welcome to give us a call if you stil have questions.
